Re-use Your Christmas Poinsettia Plant for Next Year

PoinsettiaDon’t know what to do with your poinsettia after Christmas. Follow these simple tips to plant and preserve your plant to use next holiday season:

Keep the soil where you plant the poinsettia moist

  • Keep the plant out of drafty weather
  • Place the plant outside every night but never if the temperature falls below 55 degrees
  • Put the plant in a larger pot so it has room to grow
  • Use fast-draining potting soil rich in organic matter
  • Keep the plant in indirect light or filtered sun
  • Cut the plant back about 8 inches in height in late March or early April
  • Prune the plant during the summer to keep it bushy and compact
  • Fertilize every 2-3 weeks
  • Place the plant in a closet every night, starting in October for 14 hours, then move it into the light each morning for a maximum of 10 hours
  • Repeat the process every day for 10 weeks and have poinsettias ready for next Christmas.
